Abstract
On the Naturalization of Morals: Nietzsche and Paul Rée
Nietzsche claimed, in the Prologue of On the Genealogy of Morals, that the acquaintance with The Origins of Moral Sensations, written by Paul Rée, stimulated him to write Human, All-Too-Human and to begin his own project of a naturalization of morals. Among the critiques to Rée in the Genealogy, I stress two issues: (1) The origins of the concepts of good and evil; (2) The historical process of moralization of customs. My paper focuses on these two issues. In order to accomplish my goal, I will first explain the ideas of Rée; second, I will discuss Nietzsche’s critiques to them; finally, I will evaluate these critiques.
